The Legion Freies Indien, or Indische Freiwilligen Infanterie Regiment 950 (also known as the Indische Freiwilligen-Legion der Waffen-SS) was created in August 1942, chiefly from disaffected Indian soldiers of the British Indian Army, captured by the Axis in North Africa.
The Indian volunteers fighting with the German Army against the British were strongly nationalistic supporters of the exiled, anti-British, president of the Indian National Congress, Subhash Chandra Bose.
A Japanese supported sovereign and autonomous state- the Azad Hind (Free India) was established with the Indian National Army as its military force. See also the Tiger Legion.
